Diagnostics: Punch Biopsy

A punch biopsy is a procedure performed to obtain a small sample of skin for diagnostic purposes using pathologic analysis. After numbing the skin, it involves the use of a tool consisting of a circular blade that is rotated into the skin to create a cylindrical-shaped wound. The depth of the punch can vary depending on the clinical need, but a punch biopsy us usually performed to obtain a sample of the full thickness of skin, which is especially important for analyzing a specimen that may be melanoma. Once the tissue sample is obtained, it is removed and sent to a laboratory for pathologic examination under a microscope. The procedure usually requires minimal suturing or dressing.
